Shawmut
Custom Solutions
Overview
Shawmut has a long history of partnering with customers
to bring unique material solutions to market. Our full spectrum
of lamination processes combined with our depth of technical resources
and experience in a wide range of industries is unique in the
technical textiles industry. Shawmut offers a full range of services
and capabilities to support custom development.

Products & Applications
MVT
& Performance Barrier Films
Shawmut sources high MVT microporous and monolithic barrier films
from around the globe. These films are made from a variety of
polymers including urethane, nylon, PTFE, and olefin-based resins.
Along with our film sourcing capabilities, Shawmut has the added
capability to engineer a film to meet a specific customer requirement
through strategic partnerships with key film manufacturers.
Flame
and Heat Resistance
Shawmut’s engineering team has decades of experience developing
and manufacturing laminated solutions to meet the extreme challenges
associated with high temperature and proximity to flame. Custom
products ranging from aluminized fiberglass to high performance
breathable laminates incorporating inherently fire retardant fibers,
such as Nomex, Kevlar and PBI, are examples of the diverse capability
we provide.
Chemical
& Biological Protection
Our products range from excellent chemical protection afforded
by the nonwoven/Saran® film laminate used in the production
of Haz Mat suits, to durable surgical gowns capable of achieving
conformance to ASTM F1670 and ASTMF1671 for blood and viral barrier
resistance.
Shawmut has demonstrated experience achieving chemical and biological
agent resistance across a broad range of applications for disposable
as well as durable lamination applications requiring wash/dry/autoclavability
to as many as 100 cycles.
Durable
Garments
We offer lamination technology that allows materials to pass the
rigors of numerous industrial launderings, autoclaving, and critical
end-use applications. Shawmut has the ability to engineer adhesives
and lamination technology to create durable materials to meet
the most demanding specification and end-use application that
a customer might encounter.
Darlexx®
Stretch Barrier Laminates
Darlexx® is an omni-directional spandex warp knit with a layer
of a highly breathable elastic monolithic membrane. Windproof,
waterproof, and breathable, Darlexx® provides solutions across
a broad spectrum of end-product applications, such as warm water
diving suits, ski racing suits, clean room hoods, boots, and gloves.
Darlexx® comes in a 2-ply or 3-ply construction.
Low
Cost Disposables
Our ability to handle extremely light-weight nonwovens and films
at high speeds with precise control of adhesive lay down (low
add-on weights), makes us a competitive alternative to direct
extrusion coating. In applications where barrier properties, soft
hand and drape, low noise, and other textile-like attributes are
desirable, our lamination technology is unmatched.
Molding
& Foaming-in-Place
As the largest laminator of automotive foam-in-place trim components
in North America, we are capable of engineering composites that
meet the critical needs of your molding and foam-in-place applications.
Shawmut specializes in three ply fabric-foam-film composites that
use lubricant free urethane films for easy molding and bonding.
Utilizing our proprietary film control process and patented pin-hole
certification system, we can engineer the appropriate film composite
for any application.
Air
and Liquid Containment
Should your application involve achieving conformance to military
specifications for potable water containment or use as fuel resistant
fabrics for the construction of collapsible fuel tank to a reinforced
structure, providing a long term barrier to air or helium, Shawmut’s
engineering team has a reputation for delivering materials conforming
to demanding challenges. Our development group will work cooperatively
with you, selecting appropriate fabrics and films to meet the
unique physical and chemical challenges of your unique application.
Molded
& Die Cut Parts
Shawmut has been Die Cutting Roll goods for over 50 years in our
Trim Components division.
We have Multi-roll capability for high volume production, as well
as shuttle Die Cutters for competitively priced low volume production.
We also have CNC cutting capability for prototype runs without
the need for hard tooling. This offers the advantage of
"testing" part size configuration without having to
commit to hard tooling expense before final part size is determined.
The Trim Components division offers a variety of
formable soft substrates for door panel inserts and other interior
components. We offer low volume molding with competitive
tooling prices, as well as multi-cavity capabilities for cost
competitive high volume soft molded inserts. In addition
we have wood and propylene-based products for high impact structural
formed inserts such as "rear load" door panels.
